"They called me names".

Don’t call us backward racists … you Mexican swine !

Former Telstra boss Sol Trujillo can complain as much as he likes  about Australians being racist and backwards for taking pot shots at his Mexican heritage. He’s partially right of course, but what Sol doesn’t get is this:

If you look like he does and you are appointed as CEO of a company as big and important as Telstra is in Australia, and then you proceed to rip off something like $50 million in wages & bonuses for yourself over a few years while at the same time shedding thousands of  jobs, providing no returns to speak of for your shareholders and bugger all service to the public, then guess what?

We’re going to label you a piece of Mexican filth all day long!

Harden up Sol, you are (or were) a public figure and that means you’re fair game and the normal courtesies that most of us extend to our visitors and new arrivals don’t apply to dickheads like you.

He was certainly a Speedy Gonzalez when it came to getting out of the country. I don’t resent him earning his money though, if I want to be head of Telstra I could glue a silly moustache on and speak with a funny accent too, but I can’t face the jokes and teasing one faces at that senior corporate level. People are so unkind.

    I pose this question.

How is this country racist if it appoints a Mexican to one of the most prized appointments in this country?

    What a Knob.

Im deeply concerned about this Ray.

I thought the whole idea of outsourcing work to mexicans was that it was cheaper than paying the locals

I say right on, DBD! Let’s all piss on him!

  5. [...] the rebuttals from Australia, and the words used, are illustrative in themselves: sour grapes, don’t call us backward racists…you Mexican swine!, ridiculous, and so [...]

Look, ‘KSAugustin’, you’re entitled to your opinion but if you want to quote me (as you’ve done on your blog) then please have the courtesy to (a) also comment here instead of just leaving a ‘ping back’ to your blog, and (b) quote me properly.

I notice you left out the most pertinent “excuse for racism” in your rambling post being what I said above: Harden up Sol, you are (or were) a public figure and that means you’re fair game and the normal courtesies that most of us extend to our visitors and new arrivals don’t apply to dickheads like you.

You ramble on about racism in general and I agree that it’s wrong to go around referring to people by their ethnicity, but in Sol’s case he has deserved every bit of it. It’s actually NOT racist to call him a Mexican bandit, etc – he has brought that on himself and it’s specifically aimed at him, not his race.

There are many “darkies” from India and elsewhere in charge of major companies in the USA. But that would never happen here in Australia – not in a hundred years. Over here, they’d be undermined by their own bitter, jealous dinki-di Aussie staff, as Sol was….their accents and mannerisms would be mocked and and a PhD would have no meaning other than “pull him down”.

No wonder Sol’s upset. He’s off to better pastures. There’s more “mateship” and “fair-go” in the US. Australis’s not racist? Then how come our indigenous people have a lower lifespan than indigenous people in NZ, Canada or the USA. They are driven to drink. And behind every drunk Abo is a wealthy white publican

    Think…..i know its hard….but think

“UB” if you read my post you might have noticed I said this: He’s partially right, meaning I agree there is racism in Australia. But I don’t agree that it affected Trujillo in any way, shape or form and he’s just being an a-hole, which is how he came across from day one.

There is a distinction between discriminating against people based on their race and discriminating against them because they’re not very nice. In Sol’s case he put people off side so the ‘Mexican’ jibes that were directed at him did not have their basis in hatred of his ethnicity but in hatred of him. And he should have been able to see that. Gee, poor Sol!

I think you’re US example is a bit erroneous too because there are many examples in Australia of people from many different ethnicities rising to the top. Although I agree that aborigines have had a raw deal and that there’s a long way to go before they have true equality.

Ray Dixon you should be ashamed of yourself. Mexican swine?? Surely you dont have to resort to this racism to get a point across?? Just what are you suggesting by calling him mexican swine?? How does this improve your arguement?? Are you suggesting that you are superior to him based on race?? Maybe you are a little jealous that you could never be the CEO of a major company and instead contaminate the internet with your racist crap.

You are part of the racism thats in Australia.

I’m suggesting that Trujillo is a “swine”. The addition of the word “Mexican” is secondary to the insult. It ain’t racism when the insult is about the person, not his ethnicity.

  11. Naveen said, on 3 June, 2009 at 6:29 am

And “Mexican” is a “secondary insult” in your book? :) Wow.

  12. Ray Dixon (Bright) said, on 3 June, 2009 at 11:12 am

Well it’s Sol who seems to think being referred to as a “Mexican” is the main insult. My point is that the insults directed at him are about him, the person, and are not based on his race. He just won’t admit that he did he a bad job and ripped Australia off for his own benefit. Call him whatever you like, he’s a prick.

  13. Ashamed Australian said, on 3 June, 2009 at 11:27 am

Being Mexican is now a secondary insult. Since when is it an insult to be of a different ethnic decent??

You say “It ain’t racism when the insult is about the person, not his ethnicity” But you applied ethnicity to the insult. So by your own definition, you are a racist.

I’m not supporting Sol views. But there is no need for your racism.

  14. Ray Dixon (Bright) said, on 3 June, 2009 at 11:56 am

That’s fairly twisted reasoning to come to that conclusion, AA. It’s Sol who raised his own ethnicity not me. I’m just saying he is a “swine” of a person and using some irony in saying so.

I think that we have to separate the racism that exists in Australia from the accusations and childish commentsof some ungrateful Mexican American who just wants to bitch about a country that he has fleeced.

Yes racism and xenophobia does exist in Australia and thats largely due to the devious efforts of Jim Saleam, Pauline Hanson , John Howard , Fred Nile and some other nasties. They have helped to perpetuate / generate some hate and refire the phobias of those who are easily manipulated. Its called stoking the fires of the flools and gulliuable to keep the boilers going that power right wing machinery. That kind of racism certainly exists in Australia.

What Sol Trujillo is referring to is some of that coupled with some or a whole bunch of that garbage he has tried to throw in as well. What he is deliberatly avoiding is the issue of racism in his own country America. Its four times worse over there. Yes he daren’t bring that up. I think that he just wants to vent a little bit of his displeasure at only getting $20 million when he possibly craved $40 million.

You know, when he was getting paid hiis weekly wage of $25,800 / annual $13.4 million did he ever once speak out about the plight of the aborigine or other ethnicties or religions that were victims racism ? I don’t think so ! It’s a sad thing to see a man who’s butt is now pointing at the country that fed him saying things like this while he seemingly deliberatly forgets the things that exist in the country where his nose is pointing to.

One of my memories of Sol is his boasting of axing 10,000 Telstra jobs.
